“Next Man” Memorial Scholarship

Two $2,500 scholarships to be awarded at the 2026 Western Heritage Classic

#TheNextMan Scholarship
In Memory of Boone Askew

#TheNextMan Scholarship will be awarded to persons of faith, hard work, and grit that has ties to the Western Heritage Classic.  This scholarship may benefit anyone who plans to attend, or is currently attending, a technical school, trade school, two- or four-year college, or joining the armed forces.  This scholarship is not based on academic achievement, but reserved for individuals who value hard work, have a love for their fellow man, and a love for the Lord.  Being #TheNextMan is all about answering the call for how the Lord wants to use you.  Whether it be helping a friend in need, serving in places near or far, or being an example to those around you; if you hear the call, “holler back.”

The Askew and Armstrong families are diligently working to “holler back” in response to the Lord’s calling on our families’ lives with the loss of our cowboy, Boone.

Requirement:  Complete the attached application questions and submit an essay “Reflecting who YOU are, your future plans, and an example of a time when you have shown characteristics of being #TheNextMan.”

Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded prior to the sale of this year’s horse for #TheNextMan scholarship, on Saturday, May 9, 2026 during the WHC Ranch Horse Sale. Please make arrangements to be in attendance.

Submit the essay and attached questions, no later than Wednesday, April 29, 2026, to:

Boone Askew

Boone Askew, son of Shawn and Angela Askew, was raised in Albany and Comanche, Texas. Boone was called home at just 17 years old. From an early age, he knew his purpose in life was to be a cowboy. He went on to work at numerous respected cattle ranches, including Guitars, 6666 Dixon Creek, Gibson Ranches, the Byrds, the Nail, the Spires, Big Creek, Turkey Tracks, the Crutch, the Sanford Ranch, Plemmons Land & Cattle, PICO Ranches, and the Bowers, among others.

As Boone began forging his own path, he developed a dream of breeding and raising his own line of ranch horses. The three mares he purchased from TJ Roberts during his time at the Spires Ranch are now managed and maintained by Scorpion Horse Company and his uncle, Casey Armstrong, in Tye, Texas.

It is the wish of Boone’s family to carry on his legacy through the Boone Askew “Next Man” Memorial Scholarship, presented through the Western Heritage Classic Ranch Horse Sale for cowboys and families of the WHC. Proceeds from the sale of this horse will be awarded to a deserving recipient at next year’s horse sale.

The “Next Man” reflects the way Boone lived his life—helping others in times of need, giving sacrificially, and, above all, answering God’s call on his life. It is the family’s prayer that when you hear God call, you answer boldly.
